Betejack Mode Guide

Betejack is the single-player roguelike Blackjack mode inside Capote. You face a series of Blackjack duels against the bar characters, draft items between duels, and try to survive long enough to challenge the final boss: Bete. Beating Bete in a single run unlocks the You bet, I’m Bete. achievement and the Bete’s Hat cosmetic.

How a run works

  1. Start a run. Pick a starting character from the roster. The character is purely cosmetic for Betejack — it changes your idle animation and a few item interactions, not your stats.
  2. First duel. You face one of the bar characters. Win to advance; lose and the run ends.
  3. Item draft. After every win you draft one of three offered items. Items are permanent for the rest of the run.
  4. Escalation. Each duel is harder than the last. Bosses gain +1 HP, then +2, then +3.
  5. Bete. After clearing every other character you face Bete. She has 5 HP. You need to win 5 duels against her in a row.

A single Betejack run takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on item drafts and how aggressive you play.

Blackjack rules in Betejack

Betejack uses standard Blackjack with a few twists:

  • Hit / Stand / Double / Split. All four standard actions are available. Double is locked until your second turn.
  • Blackjack pays 3 to 2. Standard payout.
  • Dealer stands on 17. Standard rule.
  • No insurance. Removed for clarity.
  • No surrender. Removed for clarity.

The interesting twist is the item layer:

  • Some items let you see the dealer’s hidden card.
  • Some items let you swap your hand with a drafted bonus card.
  • Some items add bonus damage to your winning hit point deduction.

The character roster in Betejack

Every character from the Roster appears as a Betejack boss. The order is randomized at the start of every run, but the difficulty curve is fixed:

  • Duel 1: 1 HP boss
  • Duel 2: 1 HP boss
  • Duel 3: 2 HP boss
  • Duel 4: 2 HP boss
  • Duel 5: 3 HP boss
  • Duel 6: 3 HP boss
  • Duel 7: Bete (5 HP)

Each boss has a fixed deck profile:

  • The observer draws conservatively and stops at 17.
  • The host draws to 16 and stops on soft 17.
  • The trash-talker draws aggressively and stops on 18.
  • The wildcard uses a mixed strategy with random shuffles.
  • The newcomer uses a beginner pattern — easy to exploit.
  • The regular draws to 17 with a small chance to push.

Items to prioritize

The full item pool is broad, but the strongest items for a clean Bete run are:

  • Plus-One Eye. Reveal the dealer’s hidden card once per duel.
  • Tie-Breaker. Win ties instead of pushing.
  • Reshuffle. Replace one bust card with a random new card.
  • Lucky Coin. Add 1 to every low card draw.
  • Sharp Glasses. Increase hit points deducted on a winning hand by 1.

Avoid items that add bonus damage without information — they look strong but the bosses scale to match.

Bete-specific tips

The Bete strategy guide covers her full pattern. The short version:

  • Stand on 18 as soon as you can.
  • Use Plus-One Eye on her turn 3.
  • Never be below 17 on her turn 4.
  • Stack healing and reshuffle items before the Bete fight.

When to start a run

  • After your first 5 Classic Capote matches, you will understand the special card pool. That experience translates directly into Betejack.
  • The Getting Started guide explains the round flow if you need a refresher.
  • If you lose your first three runs, that is normal. Bete is intended to be a wall.
